An arsonist went on a wrecking spree in a South Yorkshire town today - damaging four cars, including a police vehicle.

Firefighters were alerted to the police car blaze on Church Street, Wath-upon-Darne, at 1.50am and within five minutes a second call was received reporting a burning transit van on nearby North Road.

At 2.05am a Citroen van was found engulfed in flames on Valley Drive and at 2.30am a people carrier was found burning on Montgomery Road.

The fires are all believed to be linked.

Two fire engines from Dearne station and one from Rotherham were tied up dealing with the arson attacks.

A police probe is underway.
