Arson blamed for chapel fire

a BLAZE at a disused carpet store and warehouse, which destroyed an historic chapel next door, was started deliberately, a fire service investigation has concluded.

The fire broke out on Thursday morning engulfing the former shop and gutting the adjoining Grade II listed Masbrough Chapel, which dates back to 1793.

Firefighters spent more than 24 hours battling the flames at the site on College Road, Masbrough.

Part of the furniture store and chapel collapsed – making the buildings too dangerous for fire crews to enter.

Firefighters prevented the flames from spreading to a neighbouring mausoleum.

The Walker family, instrumental in the growth of Rotherham’s iron and steel industry, built the methodist chapel.

n Anyone with information about the blaze should call police on 101.
