A man who threatened supermarket staff with an axe during an armed robbery in Barnsley is being hunted by police.

He struck at the Co-op in High Street, Worsbrough Dale, at 9.15pm on Saturday and escaped with a quantity of cash in a holdall.

Detectives hope that people may remember seeing the robber, who was wearing a high visibility orange suit when he struck.

They have released a CCTV image of the suspect in the hope that somebody may recognise him.

The robber produced an axe in the shop and threatened staff while making demands for cash, which they handed over.

Temporary Detective Sergeant Andy Knowles, leading the hunt for the robber for South Yorkshire Police, said: “This was a scary attack in a shop that had members of the public present.

“It is lucky nobody was injured during this incident and we need your help identifying the person responsible.”

The robber was last seen fleeing the scene in the direction of George Street.

Witnesses to the incident or anyone with any information on the culprit should call South Yorkshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 1,240 of July 18 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
