Police are hunting an armed robbery who held up a newsagents in Sheffield.

The culprit, who was armed with a knife and wearing a mask, struck at Birley Moor News, Birley Moor Road, on Saturday afternoon.

He threatened a shop assistant with the weapon and escaped with cash from the till.

Witnesses said the robber was tall, slim and wearing a black sweatshirt with a grey hood and grey shoulders, black tracksuit bottoms and a black balaclava.

Detective Constable James Horsfield said: “There would have been many people in and around the area at the time of the robbery and I am in no doubt the suspect would have attracted some attention as he ran away from the shop.

“If you were in and around Birley Moor Road that afternoon, please take a moment to think back. Did you see a man dressed in dark clothing acting suspiciously in the hour before the incident, or a man matching the suspect’s description running away from the scene?

“I’m also appealing to motorists passing through the area who may have also seen the suspect as he fled the scene.

“We want to hear from anyone with information that could assist our inquiries.”

Anyone with information should call South Yorkshire Police on 101, quoting incident number 726 of September 7, or Crimestoppers on 0800 111555.
