Nathan Campbell, aged 29, was spotted driving at speed and was pursued into a dead-end in Sheffield near Duke Street where police used a stun-gun to bring the defendant under control, according to a Sheffield Magistrates' Court hearing.

Emily King, prosecuting, told the December 19 hearing: “Police pursued him and illuminated lights signalling for him to stop. He signalled left to stop but pulled out and continued to drive and pulled onto a street at speed.

“Police managed to get in front but he drove past the police car and was pursued until he turned into a dead-end and lost control of the back end of the vehicle and was stopped by police.”

Miss king added Campbell got out and “sought to resist arrest” so police used a Taser four times.

The defendant, of Brownberrie Walk, Horsforth, Leeds, pleaded guilty to using a vehicle without insurance and without a licence and to failing to stop for police after the incident on December 1. He also admitted using a fraudulent registration mark.

Campbell said he had been moving out of the way to let police pass and claimed he had not driven away because he had not realised they were trying to stop him.

He added he was sorry for the driving offences but claimed he had his hands in the air and was “Tasered” for no reason.

Magistrates adjourned Campbell's case until January 16 to check his driving licence information before sentencing
