Armed police swarm Sheffield tower block with residents evacuated

Armed police swarmed a Sheffield tower block on Monday amid reports of hazardous substances in the building.

Four police cars and three fire engines were pictured at Cliff Block on Deer Park Road, Stannington at around 1pm after emergency services were alerted to the possibility there could be harmful materials inside, a South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue spokesperson said.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesperson said officers became aware about potentially dangerous chemicals being stored at a flat in the 15-storey building while they were executing a warrant there. A 36-year-old man arrested at the scene remains in police custody.

A search of the building was carried out, with some residents evacuated, but nothing dangerous was found. One woman whose daughter lives in Cliff Block told The Star armed police arrived at the building on Monday morning and were seen in the hallway on one floor. Emergency services remained at the scene at 3pm.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “Following the arrest of a man in Sheffield on suspicion of possession of a firearm, officers conducted a warrant at a flat on Deer Park View, Stannington, today (Monday 7 September)."During the arrest, details were provided about chemicals stored at the premises. As a precaution, immediate residents were evacuated while specialist officers examined the scene along with South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue. The substances have now been safely removed from the premises and residents are being allowed to return to their homes.”
