Arbourthorne residents organise public meeting to 'stand up' against violence following Sheffield shooting

Concerned residents of Arbourthorne have launched a passionate plea for their community to ‘stand up’ against violence in the area after a boy, 12, was shot in the leg yesterday (January 12).

They have called on fellow Sheffield people to attend a meeting to ‘change what’s happening’ in their community.

A boy was injured in a drive-by shooting on Errington Road, Arbourthorne, with emergency services being called to the scene around 3.45pm yesterday.

He was shot when a gun was fired from a white vehicle as it drove past adults and children on the street and is now recovering in hospital.

No arrests have been made so far, however there is a greater police presents on the streets in the area to reassure members of the public.

A post on a Facebook page for the meeting says: “A small group of Arbourthorne residents have got together and called a public meeting, and we're inviting all our residents to attend.

“It's time for Arbourthorne to stand up!

“SY Police and Councillor Ben Miskell have been invited too, so that we can get some direct answers with regard to concerns over the increase of violent crime; knife and gun crime that is affecting our community; and especially our kids.

“We have a lot of concerns and need some concrete plans in place going forward to reassure and protect our lovely community.

“Anti knives/gang crime group, Mums United have also been invited as they have been working on these issues in other areas of the city.

“All residents are welcomed and encouraged to attend; especially parents.

“Please come along, we are a strong and proud community, we can only change what's happening by coming together.”

The meeting will take place at Arbourthorne Community Centre on Edenhall Road at 5.30pm on Wednesday, January 22. It is hosted by the Arbourthorne People Facebook page.

The shooting in Arbourthorne was one of two that took place in Sheffield over the weekend.

A gun was fired in Kettle Black cocktail bar on Eccleshall Road just before 11pm on Friday (January 10). A 24-year-old man was arrested.
