Harold Duffield was at home on Crossland Place, Gleadless Townend, where he has been self-isolating as his age makes him particularly vulnerable COVID-19, when burglars broke in at around 3am on Sunday (April 26).

A number of his possessions were stolen, including his new television.

Speaking to The Star, his granddaughter Lucia Livoti said: “As a family we are beside ourselves. We are devastated.

“This has really unsettled my grandpa. He has lived in that house for the best part of 60 years and has never had any problems before. He is struggling to comprehend that something like this could happen to him at a time like this.

“We have tried so hard to keep him safe at the moment. He is very vulnerable to COVID-19 at his age so my mum has been scrupulous when doing his washing and shopping, and we have put a sign on his door to tell people to step back and not go near him.

“Now some people have just broken into his house and walked in with no regard whatsoever for his health. They have put him at risk as they could have contaminated his house.”

Lucia took to social media to spread the word about the burglary, and residents of Gleadless have grouped together to offer support for Harold.

Harold’s neighbours have also set up a fundraiser to replace the stolen possessions, which has already raised more than £500.

“The response from people, particularly his neighbours, has been wonderful and so uplifting. One neighbour in particular, called Julie, has been amazing,” Lucia added.

“I am really hoping the community spirit will help lift my grandpa as that is all he has at the moment.”

South Yorkshire Police have confirmed that they are investigating the burglary.
