Anger as vandals smash up bus shelters in Sheffield suburb

Glass panels were broken on shelters on Lowedges Road, Batemoor Road and Dyche Lane causing more than £800 of damage.

Local councillors Richard Shaw, Simon Clement-Jones and Sophie Thornton contacted police and South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive to ask for the shelters to be repaired as soon as possible and asked Streets Ahead to clean up the broken glass all over the streets and in grass verges.

The three councillors have criticised the attacks, which happened overnight on Sunday into Monday.

Coun Simon Clement-Jones said: “We were very concerned about this senseless act of vandalism, which only serves to make residents in our community feel unsafe.

“Residents have said that while they were waiting to catch the bus early on Monday morning, they couldn’t sit down because of glass all over the seats and bits of glass still falling down from the shattered windows.

“The bus shelters that were smashed are near our local primary and secondary schools, so the smashed glass everywhere could have been dangerous to young children.

“We have contacted the police and will work with them to continue to keep residents informed on this issue.”

South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive said a total of five panels were broken across the three shelters. The total repair cost is £805, comprising four £167 panel repairs and one £135 panel repair.
