A South Yorkshire Police drug dog was poised to search a car before an offender admitted he had cannabis

Sheffield Magistrates’ Court heard on October 28 how Thomas Platt, aged 22, of Winney Hill, Harthill, had been a front-seat passenger in a car which was stopped by police on Durham Way at Parkgate, Rotherham.
Robert Coyne, prosecuting, said: “When police spoke with the occupants they could smell cannabis and the defendant has taken from his pocket a small wrap of cannabis and handed it to the police, and he accepted it was his and his intention was to smoke it.”

Hide AdLabourer Platt, who has a previous conviction for possessing a bladed article in a public place and a caution for possessing cannabis, pleaded guilty to possessing the class B drug cannabis after the incident on April 9.
Michael Jones, defending, said: “He was a passenger in a car stopped by police for what well might have been a routine check and a smell of cannabis was coming from the car and a police search dog was brought to the car.
"He was asked if there was anything to tell them before letting the dog in the car and he admitted possessing cannabis.”
Mr Jones added that Platt only had a small amount of cannabis that would have just been enough to smoke one cigarette.

Hide AdMagistrates fined Platt £190 and ordered him to pay £85 costs and a £32 victim surcharge.
