A South Yorkshire offender caught with cannabis plants planned to sell drugs on

Sheffield Crown Court heard on March 18 how Carl Roberts, aged 40, of Goosebutt Street, Parkgate, Rotherham, was found with several cannabis plants after police visited his home.
Temitayo Dasaolu, prosecuting, said: “Two officers attended the defendant’s address on July 17, 2019, and spoke to the defendant and he was open and admitted he was growing cannabis at the address.”

Hide AdMs Dasaolu added that a search followed and several plants were discovered in a cupboard including two fully-grown plants and one small grown plant.
She said that an expert reported the potential yield from the plants could have been worth thousands of pounds.
Roberts, who has previous convictions, pleaded guilty to possessing the class B drug with intent to supply.
Katie Riekstina, defending, said Roberts had suffered the loss of his mother and a brother within a short period of time and this led to a significant amount of debt.

Hide AdShe said: “These deaths triggered a significant amount of debt and he acted selfishly and he thought this was the best way to pay off the debts given that he lost his job as well.”
Ms Riekstina added that Roberts now has a job and his eldest son is his apprentice.
Recorder Darren Preston sentenced Roberts to 12 months of custody suspended for 12 months with 150 hours of unpaid work and ordered him to pay £300 costs.
