Here, we have summarised the facts of cases relating to 11 South Yorkshire defendants whose offending was so serious that the judges presiding over their cases felt they had no option but to jail them.
They have been taken off the county’s streets, with custodial sentences ranging from six months to 21 years being passed.
5. Gareth Leach and Kyle Marton: Jailed for nine years each
Half brothers Gareth Leach, 28, and Kyle Martin, 22, killed 45-year-old disabled man Dean Williamson when they attacked him in the street outside his him in Rotherham after they believed he had stolen their mother's mobility scooter. Mohammed Shabaz, aged 19, of Manchester Road, Oldham, was found guilty of attempted murder after repeatedly stabbing a man outside the Markazi Jamia Masjid mosque in Darnall. The victim had previously been acquitted of the murder of Shabaz's cousin, which Judge Richardson said left him "incensed". He was jailed for 21 years. Photo: Alastair Ulke
7. Laura Stephenson: Jailed for 28 months
Laura Stephenson, 28, from Rotherham, groomed and had sex with a 15-year-old boy in 2018. She admitted two counts of sexual activity with a child and handed a 10-year sexual harm prevention order. Her victim suffered mental health issues and disclosed the abuse to his GP, before a referral was made to social care. Photo: Alastair Ulke
8. Bradley Joynson: Jailed for four and a half years
Bradley Joynson, aged 21, of Rotherwood Crescent, Thurcroft, Rotherham, was jailed four four years for sexual activity with four different child complainants under 16. An investigation into him was launched after one of his 14-year-old victims had to see her doctor with a sexually-transmitted infection.
