Violent husband smashed lampshade over wife’s head when he “turned nasty"
Alcohol had been a “third party” in the couple’s 30-year relationship
A violent husband smashed a lampshade over his wife’s head when he “turned nasty” after too much to drink, a court heard.
David Bridges, aged 60, was tied to a restraining order in respect of his estranged partner of 30 years at the time - having served 20 months’ jail for previous violence against her.

But he showed up at his ex’s house on May 12 - having been invited by her nephew who was also present but had not informed her he would be coming.
Bev Wright, prosecuting, described how all present were drinking however Bridges’ ex went upstairs when his behaviour worsened to “diffuse the situation”.
After pursuing his wife upstairs and using a light fixture as a weapon, Bridges destroyed her TV, “dragged” her around the house and took her “by the throat” with both hands.
Bridges also sent a voice note to his daughter - who he was also banned from contacting - as the assault was ongoing, who called police.
After his arrest Bridges blamed the complainant’s injuries on her dog, the court heard.
Bridges had 11 previous convictions for 24 offences including four assaults.
A barrister representing him said alcohol had been a “third party” in the couple’s 30-year relationship and 12-year marriage.
The defendant had relied on it while working away as a train driver and a chef.
Judge Nigel Slater told Bridges: “This represents a flagrant disregard for a restraining order for similar offences against this complainant - a custodial term is inevitable.”
Bridges, of Doncaster Road, Barnsley, was jailed for 27 months.
He admitted ABH and breaching a restraining order.
