Prison guard romped in toilet with inmate lover who posed for photos in cell wearing women's underwear

“For a prison officer to breach the trust reposed in her by doing what you did in the way you did is outrageous”

A prison officer with 20 years experience threw it all away to enter into a six-month sexual relationship with an inmate, for whom she commandeered a prison officers’ toilet to use for their secret trysts.

52-year-old Claire Hall appeared emotionless as she was jailed over her secret romance with prisoner Shane Thomas at HMP Lindholme.

“You as a woman in a middle age became attracted to a prisoner 20 years your junior, having been divorced for some 13 years,” The Recorder of Sheffield Judge Jeremy Richardson KC told Hall, who appeared in the dock wearing a white shirt and yellow trousers.

He continued: “The whole episode is serious, the whole episode is sordid.”

In addition to Thomas’ cell, the romping couple used a toilet designated for prison officers for their forbidden liaisons.

Later, when Hall gave investigating officers access to her mobile phone, photographs showing Thomas posing in women’s underwear in his cell were discovered.

Hall claimed, through her barrister, however that Thomas sent the pictures to a family member as a joke, and she later came into possession of them.

“For a prison officer to breach the trust reposed in her by doing what you did in the way you did is outrageous. It compromises the good order of the prison.”

The pair aroused the suspicions of prison staff after Hall was observed being “overfamiliar” with Thomas, prosecutor Richard Sheldon told Sheffield Crown Court.

Her colleagues vowed to keep a watchful eye on Hall, following her behaviour towards him during a training exercise in the prison, resulting in lockdown conditions being observed.

“You handed him a mug, you spoke with him, and at that stage, other officers were put on alert as to your conduct.

“It appears you also opened prison doors when you should not have done so. That was a consequential breach of security.”

Five days later, Hall was spotted on CCTV going into Thomas’ cell when she “should not have been there” and emerging around 12 minutes later.

Mr Sheldon said Hall resigned “on the spot” when she was challenged about her conduct in the weeks afterwards.

“She admitted she had become too close to him. She went on to admit she had a sexual relationship with him for about six months, all of that inside the prison.”

Hall, of Calder Avenue, Royston, Barnsley, subsequently pleaded guilty to one count of holder of a public office wilfully neglected to perform duty / wilfully misconducted herself at an earlier hearing.

Kara Frith, defending, told the court that Hall’s 14-year-old daughter, for whom she has full custody, would have to live with her grandparents should Hall spend any time behind bars.

It was suggested the mother and daughter may also lose their family home as a result of Hall’s prison sentence.

Hall, said Ms Frith, had worked at HMP Lindholme from 1999 until 2024, when the relationship with Thomas began, without any issues, and had also remained out of trouble in the intervening two years.

Ms Frith also pointed to Hall’s lack of criminal record, previous good character, and the caring responsibilities she has for her mother as being amongst the reasons that a prison sentence could be suspended.

The Recorder of Sheffield, Judge Jeremy Richardson KC, ruled, however, that Hall’s conduct was simply so serious that only an immediate jail term would suffice.

Jailing Hall for nine months, Judge Richardson told her: “What a catastrophe, what a catastrophe for you and your young daughter.”

He continued: “This case is a paradigm example of how a prison officer should never behave…punishment and deterrence, both of which are the purpose of sentence, must be accentuated in this case.”
