A 35-year-old man has been sentenced after he was caught smuggling drugs into a prison.

A man has been jailed at Sheffield Crown Court for smuggling drugs into Lindholme Prison near Doncaster using a drone.

Kamal Miah, 35, of Tigley Avenue, Birmingham was also a part of a wider conspiracy for smuggling drugs, knives and weapons into prisons in London from April 2025 to April 2026.

He was sentenced for both of these cases by The Recorder of Sheffield, Judge Jeremy Richardson, on Monday, November 2, 2026, who emphasised that “totality is front and centre” of his consideration for this case.

On January 3, 2024, Miah attempted to convey prohibited articles worth over £9,000 into Lindholme prison by means of a drone, the court heard.

Recorder Richardson said: “You were together with another man who is almost certainly your brother.

“The drone was flown over with the intention to deliver a package to inmates.”

At 4.30am, police officers were made aware that there was a drone flying, and they found Miah in a silver Mercedes close to the area.

The court heard how “the drone descended into some bushes near the car” and was recovered by police.

The drone was carrying a package that held a variety of drugs including cannabis, MDMA, cocaine, synthetic cannabis - known as spice, and mobile phones.

In regards to the offences made in London, Miah was a part of a “conspiracy to convey drugs and weapons and other items” in various prisons across the UK.

He was a part of an “organised group” with a variety of co-conspirators.

This group targeted a number of prisons throughout November 2025, including Brixton, Wandsworth, Maidstone, Swaleside and more.

Explaining the events, Recorder Richardson told the court how he was involved in 226 drone flights into prisons.

He said: “Your role was to be the remote drone pilot - there was a high level of sophistication to what you were doing.”

The impact of conveying items in and out of prisons, is that it “increases the risk of assault to both staff and prisoners”.

It was heard that Miah pleaded guilty, which was emphasised in the defence, and that his daughter is “seriously ill”.

Whilst the judge accepted that Miah’s role was not “leading” in the “criminal gang”, he did state that he was “heavily involved”.

When sentencing the defendant, he told the court how the Sheffield-related offence was unsuccessful because of police intervention, and that this occasion was “not part of a wider conspiracy”, like the offences in London.

On Monday, November 2, Miah was sentenced to nine years imprisonment at Sheffield Crown Court, speaking directly to the defendant, he said: “You are not a man of good character.”

He emphasised to the court that this sentence “reflects the overall criminality” of both cases.
