Elderly Barnsley paedophile likely to die behind bars after finally facing punishment for wicked crimes

“You’ve shown not an ounce of remorse for your appalling behaviour towards these children”

An elderly paedophile is likely to die behind bars after finally being brought to justice over a catalogue of horrific sex offences committed against young children.

Remorseless Geoffrey Hall sought to deny responsibility for the wicked abuse he subjected two youngsters to, but a jury saw through his lies to convict him of 13 offences.

Handing him a 22-year jail term, Judge Sarah Wright told him: “You’ve shown not an ounce of remorse for your appalling behaviour towards these children…you’ve caused severe psychological harm to them.”

Even after the verdicts were returned, 82-year-old Hall still refused to admit what he had done, attempting instead to “discredit” the survivors of his abuse to the author of his pre-sentence report.

But on Monday (September 21, 2026), Hall’s decades of avoiding punishment was brought to an end at Sheffield Crown Court.

Handing him a 22-year jail term, Judge Sarah Wright told him: “You’ve shown not an ounce of remorse for your appalling behaviour towards these children…you’ve caused severe psychological harm to them.”

Judge Wright told Hall he must serve at least two thirds of his sentence behind bars, meaning he may never leave prison.

Despite this, she still made Hall the subject of a one-year extended licence period, bringing his total sentence to one of 23 years.

The court heard how both the survivors of Hall’s abuse continue to be impacted daily by the trauma he inflicted upon them.

In a statement to the court, one victim described how they turned to drink to help “numb” the pain of the sexual abuse they endured as a child, leading to them becoming an alcoholic.

Heartbreakingly, they also revealed the myriad of ways in which they harmed themselves, including starvation, burning and overdoses, in response to Hall’s heinous crimes.

The second victim Hall abused detailed the decades of low self-esteem they had experienced after he sexually abused them, and said they still suffer from nightmares and feels fearful around the men.

Judge Wright said she considered Hall to have used grooming techniques, violence - which in the case of the male complainant included burning his fingers - and fear as part of the sexual abuse.

Neither of the complainants, both of whom are entitled to lifelong anonymity, came forward about their abuse until recent years.

Judge Wright said it was clear that in both cases, Hall had instilled a fear of not being believed in both of his young victims.

Jurors convicted Hall, of Well Hill Grove, Royston, Barnsley, of two counts of buggery; four counts of indecency with a child; five counts of indecent assault and two counts of indecent assault on a child.

Defending, David Hall said his client’s last living relative died recently, and he has also had to give his dog away ahead of his likely prison sentence.

Mr Hall said the defendant, who has poor mobility, will now lose his house, and came to court with all of the worldly possessions he can keep in a bin bag, adding: “He’s got nothing to look forward to.”

Sending Hall down, Judge Wright told him: “They’ve lived with guilt, fear and shame…and just like the situation you find yourself in, and there is but one person to blame - and that is you.”

Judge Wright also granted indefinite restraining orders.

*Please note: When asked for a custody image of Hall, South Yorkshire Police said they do not hold one because “he attended for a voluntary interview”
