County ‘bristling’ with musical talent

Have your say

A MUSIC mogul has branded South Yorkshire talent ‘as strong as anywhere in the world’.

Mat Hume, founder of new music and arts venture Fourth City, wants to create a buzz around the county’s music scene and a hub for artists to meet and share contacts.

Having been part of his own rock band MonoZero for 17 years, Mat now wants to use his experience to help aspiring musicians.

He said: “I started Fourth City because I was fed up of not seeing enough good local bands. I want people to stop sitting at home watching other people’s lives, and experience their own.”

The 35-year-old, from Ecclesfield, has promised fortnightly showcases at West Street Live, and wants to involve anyone with a creative talent, from art to poetry.

Mat added: “The music scene in Sheffield is a ridiculously strong market, particularly the metal and blues scene. I have no doubt that, in a year, there will be bands doing so well it will be reminiscent of when the Arctic Monkeys broke.”

Mat and business partner Chris Pickhead hope to hold an exhibition early next year.
