I am appalled but, sadly, not surprised at the council’s decision to put 16 of Sheffield’s libraries up for closure, including both Greenhill library and Jordanthorpe library.
This is despite a petition of more than 13,000 people against the closures.
Libraries are an invaluable part of our community and provide much more than just books. They provide games and jigsaws for pensioners and young families, computers and internet access for schoolchildren and for people looking for work and also meeting spaces for community groups.
Councillors Roy Munn and Clive Skelton have clearly failed to stand up for local people against their Labour pals.
Our city’s facilities are not safe from a council which prioritises spending on consultants and meeting rooms over the wishes of the community.
