Councillors back call to save ‘assets’

Opposition Liberal Democrat members on Sheffield Council have backed calls for more pubs to be granted protected status in the city.

The council recently turned down applications to have nine pubs declared ‘assets of community value’.

Officers said they could not determine where each pub’s local community lay.

The Lib Dems have tabled a motion to a full council meeting. Coun Colin Ross, leader of the council’s Lib Dem group, said: “Pubs serve a purpose in bringing people together and are part of our city’s heritage.”
