Council’s bid to save £7m

SHEFFIELD Council must still find £7.2 million of savings by April despite efforts to improve efficiency.

A report to the authority’s cabinet revealed all departments are predicted to underspend budgets by £0.8 million during 2010/11 but an underspend of £8m is needed to cover cost of redundancies due to be announced next month.

The latest report, which covers up to November, shows finances within all departments are relatively healthy - apart from Culture, where a £1.1m overspend is expected this year, to absorb £1.7m lent to Museums Sheffield, which is likely to be written off.

A shortage of suitable special needs school placements in Sheffield has led to a £812,000 overspend to cover the cost of finding places in neighbouring areas.
