Council meeting rebellion plan

OPPOSITION councillors in Sheffield are planning a protest over changes to debates.

Monthly full council meetings are changing from Wednesday, with ruling Labour councillors setting the first motions at most meetings and a time limit for discussing each issue scrapped.

The first two items at Wednesday’s meeting will be criticising Government policy and will not be about local issues.

Lib Dem and Green councillors are planning to participate for the first 40 minutes – the old time limit.

Lib Dem leader, Coun Shaffaq Mohammed, said: “The opening motions contain 23 paragraphs and 1,072 words but do not use the word ‘Sheffield’ once. Local people have a number of concerns for debate like changes to recycling centres.”

Coun Julie Dore replied: “I find this attack bizarre when the Lib Dems proposed a motion about the Pussy Riot case in Russia last month.”
