CHESTERFIELD Council has defended a decision to spend £10,000 on new welcome signs on roads into the town - which omit the traditional image of the historic Crooked Spire in favour of a wave design.
The authority says the wave logo on the 11 new signs is still based upon the spire - but with a ‘modern take’.
The signs also incorporate interchangeable sections that will allow major events and the market to be promoted.
Peter Swallow, chair of Destination Chesterfield - the consortium of council and business representatives which promotes the town - said: “The impression we give visitors when they arrive is vital.
“The objective is to improve the arrival at key gateways into the town and also turn them into promotional opportunities.”
