Doncaster Council has given the green light for two sizeable housing developments that will create more than 300 new homes in the borough.

The local authority’s planning committee unanimously voted through the applications at a meeting earlier this week.

Submitted by Muse Developments, which has previously worked on the council’s Civic Offices and the Cast Theatre, the first development will comprise some 147 homes.

The site is located on land off Lakeside Boulevard in Lakeside, near to a tree belt on the boundary with St Peter’s School to the north, a public footpath to the west and a man-made beach to the south.

The site’s only use at present is as a temporary location for lake-based events such as the Jet Ski Championships, but planners confirmed another beach is due to be constructed at Lakeside, which will be used for the Jet Ski Championships instead.

Work on the housing development, which will consist of a mixture of one, two, three, four and five bedroom homes, is due to begin in October this year. It will therefore not affect this year’s British Jet Ski Championship races, which are set to take place on September 3 and 4.

Chris Jones, of Muse Developments, told the planning meeting: “We have worked with the council to build the Civic Offices, Cast, The Gables and The Residents development.

“This is the next stage of that.

“The development will have open space next to the lake and we will keep some of the woodlands near to the school. “

The second development will be based on land at Kingsway in Stainforth.

House builders Gleeson Development Ltd will erect a total of 170 new homes.

Speaking at the meeting, company spokesman Steve Gamble said that all of the homes would be ‘affordable’.

He said: “Gleeson take special care in having houses that are affordable to as much of the population as possible.

“With this development, the two bedroom houses will start at £85,000 and with the government’s Help to Buy scheme this will bring the cost down to £63,500.

“That should be affordable to a couple who both earn the minimum wage.

“We try to support the local community when we build houses and try to give employment to people living within two miles of it where possible.”
