Coun Peter Price is still going strong

It was great to read the Star's Sports Retro last week and see the photo of my opening of the Woodbourn Road Athletics Arena in 1984.

But I really must correct your reference to, former Councillor Peter Price.

I can assure you Councillor Peter Price is not former and is still going strong and still fighting the good fight on behalf of his constituents in Shiregreen/Brightside.

Indeed I now have the honour of being the longest-serving city councillor in Sheffield’s history.

However, it is interesting to remember that the opening of the Woodbourn Athletic track heralded the beginning of a decade of expansion of high quality sporting and culture facilities here in Sheffield, the likes of which had not been seen within local government and one which transformed our city.

I was proud to be chair of the leisure service committee and deputy leader of the council which saw through the building of these facilities, Ponds Forge, Sheffield Arena, Don Valley Stadium, Hillsborough Leisure Centre, Graves Tennis Centre, Concord floodlit pitches, the Waltheof basketball hall and the Lyceum Theatre, all of course launched by the World Student Games and led to Sheffield being awarded the title of the first National City of Sport by Sport England in 1993.

This in turn then led to our city being awarded the new English Institute for Sport with its marvellous indoor facilities and iceSheffield.

The growth of course still continues with the Don Valley Stadium now being replaced by the Olympic legacy investment giving us more quality sports provision.

Well, I for one am quite proud of Sheffield’s sporting achievements and while I may be entering my late 70s now, I will never cease arguing the case for sport and culture and its economic and social value to society in addition to the contribution it makes to the health and wellbeing of our community.

Still Councillor Peter Price
