After having a cabbage thrown at him by Villa fans and watching his team throw away the lead in a 3-3 draw against Preston on Tuesday night, it's fair to say Bruce hasn't had the best week.

With Villa languishing in 13th in the Championship table whoever takes over will have some work to do to drag the Birmingham club into contention for the play-offs and promotion.

As speculation about his successor continues, it seems the bookies think ex-Sheffield Wednesday boss Carlos Carvalhal is in with a shout '“ the odds on the Portuguese joining Villa are 12/1.

Carvalhal recently said on Talksport radio that England is his preference for his next managerial role and that any job he takes will not be about the money.

The Portuguese left the Owls before a spell with Premier League Swansea City last season.
