Coroner sends heartfelt message to families of Meadowhall crash victims as inquest opens

An inquest opened today (February 9) into the deaths of the two men whose car left the bridge at Meadwhall Way on January 30.

Senior Coroner David Urpeth told the court that Thomas Hydes, 24, and his nephew Joshua Hydes, 20 (referred to as Joshua Bull at the inquest), were travelling in a white Mercedes GLS 400 AMG having left Joshua’s house in Kiveton at 6.30pm.

At 7.10pm emergency services were called after the vehicle, which had been loaned to Thomas Hydes, left the road on the bridge and landed in the River Don below.

Responders managed to free both men from the vehicle.

The court heard that Thomas, a mechanic, and Joshua, an accountant, were taken to Northern General Hospital where they were pronounced dead.

Mr Urpeth said: “I appreciate the devastation this will have caused both families and I offer my condolences.”

He adjourned the inquest to the short inquest court on May 18, 2021, pending a post mortem and police report.
