Cool Lawson laps up late scare as he races to maiden victory

Chesterfield's JHR Developments team basked in the glory of their first Renault Clio Cup race victory of the season, with Robert Lawson celebrating his maiden career win at Snetterton.

For rounds seven and eight, the team began the weekend leading the Team Championship by 46 points, with Robert Lawson third in the Driver’s Championship.

Lawson started round eight, second on the grid.

Under pressure from Michael Doyle, everything went to plan as Lawson pulled out a healthy lead.

As he approached the finishing line at what he thought was the end of the 14-lap race, Lawson slowed down expecting the chequered flag.

To his horror, Lawson realised there were still two further laps.

With Doyle closing, the heat was on in a mad two-lap dash.

Needing to keep his wits about him, Lawson managed to fend off all of Doyle’s advances, to win his first ever race, having led for the full 16 laps.

“To win your first race is an amazing feeling,” Lawson explained.

“This is an emotional time for me.”
