Cooking fat clogs drains

A FIFTH of blockages in sewers around Sheffield was caused by cooking fat being poured down drains, investigators have found.

Teams of engineers from Yorkshire Water have probed 39,600 city properties over the last few weeks, lifting 13,600 manholes covers and checking 18,800 drains.

They found 113 blockages, 23 of which were caused by people putting fat down their sinks and it solidifying in their pipes.

Network technician Chris Bradshaw said Sheffield was a particular problem.
