The Millers have spent all summer trying to bring the midfielder, who spent last season on loan at the AESSEAL New York Stadium, back from Brighton, but came up against constant frustration.

However, with just hours of the loan window remaining, the two clubs have been able to reach an agreement which will see the Irishman spend the 2018-19 campaign on loan with the Millers.

Boss Paul Warne said moments after his side's League One play-off win at Wembley that he was keen to get Towell back, but even he would not have envisaged how tough it would be.

The Millers faced several obstacles throughout the process, including an issue with wages, but Warne kept knocking on Brighton's door and finally got the answer he was after.

Towell's return comes one year to the day since his original arrival, which also came in the final moments of the window.

He went on to play a key part for the Millers in their League One promotion campaign, making 45 appearances and winning the goal of the season award for an effort at Northampton.

He went back to Brighton for pre-season training but was never going to figure in Chris Hughton's plan and, with his contract expiring next summer, his career on the south coast is now over.

The Irishman is unlikely to feature for the Millers in their Championship game at Wigan this weekend as they missed the 12pm deadline.
