Concern over plans to convert furniture store

SHEFFIELD Council has been asked for more information about a planning application to convert a furnishing store into 16 bedsits amid fears it may become a hostel.

Stocksbridge Town Council has asked for the information concerning the application for the building in Manchester Road, Stocksbridge. Members have also asked the city council for the application to be determined by the planning board and not council officers.

Coun Jack Clarkson said: “There is concern this application could lead to this building becoming a hostel.

“They are proposing to have 16 bedsit-type rooms over several floors with shared kitchens and toilets and it is just not suitable for a hostel.”

Coun Sue Abrams, town mayor, said: “This is not a student area and we need to know what is being proposed for this building.”
