Concern over early sale of fireworks

POLICE say they are concerned by the appearance of fireworks in Doncaster shops with still a month to go before Bonfire Night.

Fire crews and police officers were called after a firework was pushed through the letterbox of the door to Coopland's bakery shop in St David's Drive, Scawsby.

Smoke from the device triggered the shop's alarm system and the firework burned itself out without causing serious damage.

But the incident has raised fears of illegally-obtained fireworks being used by vandals.

"We believe fireworks should not be on sale this far ahead of Bonfire Night and it is very worrying for us," said Watch Manager Dave Barrett, of Doncaster fire station.

Police have also issued a warning to the public.

Spokeswoman Lindsay Rust said: "It is an offence for a person under 18 to be in possession of fireworks in a public place, and throwing fireworks in a public area can result in fines or prosecution at court.

"People need to be aware that if they break the law they will be dealt with. Residents can help by reporting incidents by calling 0114 220 2020."
