Community spirit prevails

London burned. Birmingham and Manchester were hit by copycat cretins.

But the mindless violence didn’t trigger here. There were no looters on greedy orgies of grabbing. The young people we are so quick to condemn didn’t rise to the Twitter-fed bait.

And in a county which has more than its fair share of social problems, particularly in a recession, that’s really saying something. About our inherent sense of decency and fair-play. And a certain pride in where we live.

Our community spirit showed itself in the floods of 2007. Mass devastation was caused and maybe that’s why we stayed calm.

People don’t forget that feeling of being helpless in the face of an uncontrollable force hellbent on destruction. Or how long it took for homes, businesses and people’s lives to be rebuilt.
