Community spirit for duo

Joanne Scaife and Amelia Wade, of Shiregreen, have picked up numerous awards in the past two years, from Sanctuary Housing Shiregreen Community Awards.

Mum Joanne was awarded the Good Neighbour Award in 2015, for her willingness to help her neighbours and friends, putting their needs above her own, and more recently walked away with the Outstanding Achievement Award, to celebrate her commitment in her role as a part champion, supporting isolated members of the community. Joanne is also an active voluneter at the Shiregreen Neighbourhood Centre and devotes much of her time to running local toddlers groups.

And 11-year-old daughter Amelia - who also volunteers at the Shiregreen Neighbourhood Centre - is already following in her mum’s big-hearted footsteps, after receiving the Karl Barton Award for the second year running - which recognises positive community action by young people.

Joanne said: “I am passionate about making Shiregreen the best neighbourhood it can be and I’m so proud of Amelia in doing everything that she does.

“Although we don’t expect to be rewarded for caring about our community, the Sanctuary’s awards are fantastic and Amelia and I are both honoured to be some of the lucky recipients.”

Sanctuary’s neighbourhood partnerships manager Melanie King said: “It’s really important to us to invest in local people and it’s thanks to people like Amelia and Joanne that Shiregreen is such a great place to live.”
