Community joins forces to spruce up Hillsborough estate

Staff from Sheffield International Venues joined the city’s Streets Ahead contractor, Amey, Hillsborough councillor George Lindars-Hammond, St John’s Church members and youngsters to pick litter from the estate’s streets.

More than 40 people were involved with the project, which was organised through the Sheffield City Trust and designed to help educate residents about litter and its impact on the area.

Tim Hicks, general manager at Hillsborough Leisure Centre, said: “We carry out regular outreach activities in Winn Gardens, such as securing funding to improve physical activity and providing outdoor gym park equipment, and we are proud to support the area once again by playing a key role in this really positive community project.”

Jane Emson, of St John’s Church on Forbes Road, said: “The day was a huge success in bringing the local community together as well as key local organisations in not only making the estate tidier but educating everyone the negative effect that litter can have on the environment.

“We hope and expect that the 40 plus people involved will be proactive in controlling this on the estate moving forwards.”

Established in 1990, Sheffield City Trust’s primary purpose is to improve the health and wellbeing of residents by providing facilities for sport and leisure activities.

SIV, part of the trust, operates 17 sport, leisure and entertainment venues across the city.

These include Ponds Forge International Sports Centre, iceSheffield, the English Institute of Sport Sheffield, Hillsborough Leisure Centre, Concord Sports Centre, Springs Leisure Centre, Heeley Swimming Pool and Beauchief Golf Course.

The company employs more than 1,000 members of staff. It secures more than £350,000 each year in funding to work with community groups.
