Comment: It's a case of keep calm and carry on for Sheffield Wednesday

Time for trust and a degree of tolerance. No win in five games, no goals in four of them.

But Sheffield Wednesday’s continuing occupation of sixth place in the Championship is a strong basis

for that opening statement.

Regarding the current run, there are things we knew already. One is that the ridiculously banned but now returning Fernando Forestieri is an important player, the team’s biggest match-winner and a tilter of tight games.

The other is a lack of pace. If there’s to be a strategic loan signing, then that, for me, is the shortfall to address.

A minor criticism is that allowing Jeremy Helan to join Wolves on loan was slightly puzzling; an erratic player, yes, but one who could stretch the opposition with sheer speed.

Outweighing all of this is that Wednesday remain a tight unit capable of better than their recent results; the head coach keeps a healthy balance in his reaction whatever the result; and, I think, the supporters retain a strong belief in the entire operation from owner Dejphon Chansiri downwards.

Yes, the shock home defeat to Neil Warnock’s Rotherham was a massively missed opportunity.

Arguments over a hairline call on a disallowed goal could not mask a non-performance. Roll on three days to Brighton away and a goalless draw, while not ideal, was a great response against an in-form rival.

Saturday at Nottingham Forest becomes pivotal, what should be a highly winnable fixture against an unconvincing mid-table outfit with an away following out in force at the City Ground. But a sense of perspective also keeps everything in check.

Such was the upheaval of last summer, there can’t have been a single Owls fan who would not have taken a real shot at the play-offs with ten matches to go.

Maybe top two, a notion I entertained up to a week ago, is unrealistic considering a separation of eleven points. But with games against Charlton and Huddersfield looming, an opportunity is there to be taken.

Mood is important and that is set from the top. Carlos Carvalhal can be excitable in the privacy of the dressing room and we don’t know just how animated he became during and after the Rotherham reverse.

Publicly, he keeps a lid on his emotions and that is vital.

It helps Wednesday supporters dance to the same tune.

The music has far from stopped.
