Come down and see what you're missing
With the 2017 Speedway season over and done, it is time to reflect on what has been a terrific season for an extra special team and promotion set-up.
Last season the Tigers failed at the last hurdle to bring the championship to Sheffield, but this year the management has put together a young team to be proud of and these lads have not let anyone down.
They blew the opposition away at a canter and then brought the league championship trophy back to Sheffield, after a 15-year wait, by beating the Ipswich Witches both home and away in two wonderful nights of thrilling speedway.
They also brought the pairs title to Sheffield in the most breathtaking fashion by beating the Redcar Bears pair on the last bend of the last lap of a truly memorable final.
I first started watching speedway at Owlerton in 1952 and over the years it’s been as big a part of my life as the Owls, but, alas, it’s never got the coverage it deserves and that’s a shame.
The coverage the football teams get is understandable as many more people go to the games, but Sheffield Tigers are the second oldest professional sport in this city but they certainly don’t get the second best coverage.
At the start of this past season, the Tigers promotion took the brave step of starting the season with a free meeting, hoping to encourage new fans to the sport, but that didn’t really work.
Speedway is such an exciting sport and all the riders are so approachable and have time for autographs and photos that I find it hard to understand why young people aren’t attracted.
All I can say to the young, and ‘old’ people who haven’t given speedway a try, come down next season and see just what you’ve been missing!
