COLUMN: The Bottle Blondes strike again

Why do we find it hard to be happy and content with our lives?

It doesn’t matter how much or what we have, we always want more.

Once there was a weary, homeless man walking along a road with his only possessions in a bag on his shoulder. He had nothing else in the world and because of this he was sad and depressed. Suddenly a thief ran up behind him, snatched the bag from his shoulder, threw the man to the ground and ran off into the distance. The man was distraught – all he owned had been taken.

He stood up and brushed himself down, more sad and depressed than ever and slowly continued his journey along the road until he turned a bend. He couldn’t believe his eyes, at the side of the road was his bag – he checked its contents – all there and untouched. He grabbed it up on his shoulder, happier and more joyful than he had been for a long time and skipped off into the distance.

He had no more than when he had started out that morning, but when faced with losing even that, he was so grateful to have it back again

Gratitude turns what we have already into enough, and enough is really all we need to be happy. Basically, our point is that we are a nation of whingers. Let’s be honest we moan about everything. It’s too hot. It’s too cold. If I had enough money I’d do so and so. For goodness sake do we ever stop?

And women, more than men (please don’t hate us for this) look for things to moan about.

Yes we do ladies.

It’s as if there’s a moaning button built inside of us. But the things that we moan about are usually trivial. Men are the biggest thing us women moan about - having to ask them to do something a million times, constantly repeating ourselves. It’s actually quite exhausting!

We should try to look on the bright side of life. Does it really matter if he leaves the toilet seat up, the lid off the tooth paste, or those dirty socks on the floor?

We even complain and moan about other people complaining and moaning.

Life would be so much easier if we could just be happy with what we have. Although we must admit it is sort of lovely to have a moan and get things off of our chests.

And of course, if we women actually DID stop moaning...well then, what would all the men find to moan about?
