Colour clue to cancer beaters

RESEARCH from Ohio State University suggests that certain red, blue and purple fruits and vegetables containing compounds called anthocyanins can slow and even stop the growth of colonic cancer cells.

The most potent sources included purple corn, black carrots, and chokeberries – black-ish small fruits found growing on shrubs in eastern North America, more often found in wet woods and swamps than on the shelves of your local supermarket.

But the good news is that several slightly more widely-available types of fruit and veg such as red cabbage, aubergines, cherries and grapes also contain the compound.
