MEMBERS of a colliery band are to represent the Midlands in the prestigious finals of the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain at the Albert Hall.
The North Nottinghamshire-based Thoresby Colliery Band went through to the finals after a regional qualifying heat at the Civic Hall in Bedworth, Warwickshire.
Thoresby Colliery Band, based in Edwinstowe, beat competition from 63 bands from the Midlands area to reach the finals.
The judges praised the band’s musicality and technical excellence.
The regional qualifiers take place every February and March when almost 500 bands from all over the country battle for places in the final.
They are divided into five leagues or sections and Thoresby qualified in the Championship Section – which is the top banding.
The band last qualified for the national finals 10 years ago.
Euphonium player Ian McCormick said: “It is a dream come true not only for me, but for the band as a whole – we have worked so hard for many years to achieve this.”
