College opens green wing

Thomas Rotherham College in Moorgate Road is one of the first in the country to install a wind turbine and solar panels.

College bosses say they hope to save thousands of pounds a year after it becomes almost totally self-sufficient for energy.

The energy-saving equipment will also be used by students for research as part of the science curriculum.

It is housed in a new three-storey extension, which also includes a roof study area and facilities for performing arts.
