College joins forces with top broadcast company

Sheffield College has launched a partnership with one of the UK's largest outside broadcast companies as they launch a new academy this summer.

Televideo, a leading supplier of outside television productions, has agreed to recruit 14 Sheffield College apprentices and provide work experience and industry talks to students.

Paul Corcoran, chief executive of The Sheffield College, said: “Televideo is a leading employer in the outside broadcast industry with contracts around the world. “This partnership means we can jointly address the national media and broadcast sector’s skill shortages by developing talent right here in Sheffield.

“Combining the college’s high-tech facilities at Hillsborough with those at the Televideo Training academy will attract and inspire students, and help one of our leading local businesses grow in home and international markets.”

The Televideo Academy hopes to recruit camera, video tape and graphics operators, and vision and sound engineers, as well as post-production staff, warehouse operatives and rigger as part of the scheme.

Apprentices will be given the opportunity to work on the coverage of a wide range of live events including the British Superbike Championships, a number of BBC Radio 1 outside broadcasts such as Radio 1’s Big Weekend, Glastonbury, Premier League football and rugby, as well as a variety of productions for Sky Sports.

Paul Scivill, managing director of Televideo, himself a former engineering apprentice and Sheffield College alumni, said: “We need more staff with the right skills and training to support business growth.

“Currently, we have to look for staff nationally when our priority is to recruit home grown talent and invest in the broadcast industry regionally.”

Places are still available on full-time courses starting at the college from this September.
