Club converts cash from charity game

A FLOOD-hit rugby club will be on the comeback trail soon when their players take on an all-star Doncaster team.

The special game, which has been organised by Doncaster law firm Atteys, aims to raise the vital funds needed to secure the short-term future of Adwick-le-Street Rugby League Club.

During the floods, training equipment, kit, medical supplies and memorabilia, which dated back to the beginning of the club's history was lost, and now the club is hoping to raise funds by pitting their skills against the all-star team.

The event on Sunday September 30 at Castle Park, Armthorpe Road, gets underway at 12pm, with kick-off at 2pm, and there will be a prize draw at 5pm. At halftime crowds will be entertained by Yorkshire Street Beat, a troupe of local street dancers. Adwick-le-street has been a stalwart of the local rugby leagues for more than 40 years and in 2003 the club secured a permanent home at Toll Bar - sharing the home of Doncaster Amateur Rugby Club.

But at the height of the flooding, the ground and club house was submerged in nearly 10ft of water. It took nearly three weeks for the flood waters to subside, leaving behind it hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of damage to the club.

John Sheppard, secretary of Adwick-le-Street RLFC, said: "By organising the special fun day, we hope that it will help to take people's minds off the devastation that was caused by the freak weather earlier this year.

"The funds raised during the day will be used to purchase equipment and medical supplies that were damaged as a result of the flooding, and help to ensure that the club has a long-term future.

"When the floods hit, we lost everything, and now we need to rebuild the club. Through the support given by Atteys, we have been able to make the idea of having special fun day a reality and I am sure that anyone in Doncaster with an involvement in rugby will help it to be a success."

Gill Knight, managing partner of Atteys, said: "We pride ourselves in enjoying strong links with the local community. We are celebrating the important contribution that Adwick-le-Street has made over the years to promote grass roots rugby in the region."

Tickets are 5 per adult, 2 per child.
