Cleaning up at awards

Have your say

A PROJECT to clean up waterways and wetlands left polluted by South Yorkshire’s coal mining and heavy industry has led to part of the county being singled out for environmental excellence.

The Dearne Valley has won two honours at the Waterways Renaissance Awards including categories for recreation and tourism, and for flood risk management.

The area has been cleaned up through the Green Heart project, run jointly by local councils, the Environment Agency, Natural England and RSPB.

Accolades handed out at the awards, run by the Waterways Trust, recognise ‘exceptional projects which have turned inland waterways into desirable places for living, learning and leisure’.
