Striking civil servants were planning a demonstration outside Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg’s Sheffield office today against Government work going overseas.

Members of the Public and Commercial Services Union were holding the protest at noon, outside the Sheffield Hallam MP’s constituency office in Nether Green.

A spokesman said: “Of the 1,200 UK staff affected by the plans, 250 are based at the Department for Work and Pensions in Sheffield.

“Elsewhere in the region, there are also 170 affected employees at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs in York and almost 80 Environment Agency staff in Leeds.

“We are calling on the Deputy Prime Minister to halt the privatisation and offshoring plans.”

The protest outside Liberal Democrat Mr Clegg’s office is against civil service information technology work going overseas.

A contract has been put out to tender which is worth £500 million over 10 years, but could be expanded further.
