A TEAM of British soldiers helping to revitalise waterways in the heart of Afghanistan is being led by a Sheffield man.

Major Andy Green, aged 36, is among seven Royal Engineers helping Afghan contractors open up 30 canal sites to try to rejuvenate agriculture in the Helmand valley.

He said: “Soon the Afghans will be using their own skills to plan and execute the maintenance and repair of their canal system.”

Canals and irrigation systems play a key role in the life of those farming the rich land in Helmand.
