City launches GPS-led tour of public art

A new GPS-led audio tourwhich guides listeners around Sheffield's post-war public art has been launched in the city.

The hour-long tour, free to any smartphone using the Geotourist app, was created by Historic England and is intended to help listeners rediscover and value the city’s overlooked and at-risk artwork from the post-war years.

Rosie Ryder, media manager for Historic England - the public body that champions and protects England’s historic places - said: “After the Second World War, art was used to bring our public spaces back to life as the country began to repair its shattered towns and cities. Sadly, our post-war public art is often overlooked or under-valued and can fall victim to scrap metal thieves or vandals. “Through this audio tour, Historic England hopes to raise awareness of just how vulnerable public art can be and strengthen people’s sense of ownership of the art that was created for them.

Sheffield listeners will discover the fascinating stories behind different pieces, many of which embody the city’s industrial steel heritage, some still cherished and others forgotten.”
