City centre Co-op supermarket to become Budgens after sell-off

A Sheffield city centre supermarket is set to be given a new name after being sold-off.

The Co-op store in Pinstone Street is one of 36 of the chain's stores which will become Budgens after a takeover.

The Co-operative Group is selling off a string of former Somerfield stores to the Food Retailer Group, eight years after its takeover of the supermarket chain.

All will be re-branded as Budgens supermarkets, with all of the 920 staff being transferred to the new business.

The Co-op bought over Somerfield in 2006 as part of a £1.6billion deal, but two years ago wrote down the value of its Somerfield store chain by £226million.

A Food Retailer Group spokesperson said: "The change in ownership will not impact daily business and stores will continue trading as usual. All employees will transfer with the business, and there are no planned redundancies."
