City is buzzing

I was so heartened by your coverage of the city centre action meeting and your editorial (Wednesday, June 15).

I agree that there is a real buzz in the city these days. It’s coming from all sides and increasingly coming together.

As well as being a Friend of the Old Town Hall and Sheffield Castle, I belong to a planning forum that has sought to find out what development is in the pipeline from individual firms, the universities, the creative and technology industries, to mention but some, and tried to test proposals against Sheffield City Council’s Vision for 2030, which is a very joined-up vision for a sustainable and thriving city.

We hope in this way to contribute to more grass roots involvement in its development.

While much of this development has been slow and patient, as so far with the heritage sites, some aspects will require major investment to come to full fruition.

Our Grey to Green route, which is being developed from Castlegate to Kelham Island, is an example of the kind of project which has only been possible with the benefit of EU funding.

I fear that, should we vote to Leave, investment for the new Retail Quarter would be once more withdrawn as developers get the jitters about job losses and reduced spending power.

Sheffield is a unique city with warm, creative and hard-working people.

It is on the verge of transforming onto an exciting new level.

It would be tragic if we voted away this great opportunity to get it right.
