Church asks for compassion

CHURCHGOERS have highlighted the need for compassion for victims of rising poverty in Sheffield.

Members of St Columba’s Church in Crosspool are encouraging MPs, councillors and the media avoid demonising people with derogatory terms such as ‘scroungers’.

The campaign came following the church’s Poverty and Homelessness Action Week.

Mary Goodwick, a parish member, said: “We are keen to support politicians and media professionals who speak on these issues in an informed and measured way.”
