MASONS have helped boost plans to restore parts of St Wilfrid’s Church in Cantley.

Leaders at the church, on Church Lane, are running Operation Comper, to restore work in the church designed by the famous Scottish architect and church designed Sir John Ninian Comper.

The St George’s Lodge number 242 Doncaster has donated £250 toward the appeal to raise cash for the work.

The cash comes from the lodge’s benevolent fund, raised through events like raffles and collisions.

Church warden Richard Paver said: “Most of the work dates from the end of the 19th century and the start of the 20th century, so there has been 100 years of ageing. We are struggling to repair it to its original glory.”

Project Comper was launched in April 2009, and aims to complete the final two phases of the restoration of the Comper work within the church by this summer.

Most of the original funding for the work came from the Childers family of Cantley Hall.
